I have cancer and it made my pancreas dump sugar. I found this out after you told me I had a problem smelling like over ripe fruit and I spoke with my doctor!

In March 2010, while Paula & the Sugar Dogs were visiting Canine Cove, the new dog park on Marco Island, Peaches alerted for a recently diagnosed diabetic who had gotten out of the hospital the day before.

Also in March 2010, Peaches alerted to a lady who visited our booth at Dog Day in Dade City. They lady indicated that she had cancer but she was very angry that we suggested she report to her doctor that a diabetic alert dog had alerted on her. She said she had enough problems.

In March 2011, while Paula & the Sugar Dogs were visiting LaCosta Resort & Spa, the location of the Chopra Center for Well Being, Peaches alerted for a diabetic who had low blood sugar in the lobby bar. He was accompanied by his doctor who had never heard of diabetic alert dogs. Boy, did they get the whole lecture in fifteen minutes or less! Before we left them, both Peaches and Sugar Boy agreed that the diabetic gentleman was fine. The diabetic was James Timothy “Mudcat” Grant (born August 13, 1935 in Lacoochee, Florida), a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Cleveland Indians.

On June 29, 2011, Robin B. of California advised that Nikki had alerted in a restaurant. She had been to Church with her husband and they went out to lunch. Of course, she had advised the hostess that Nikki is a diabetic alert dog and he was waiting patiently at her feet while she ordered. There was a delay in her food being served and Robin’s blood glucose dropped very quickly. Sweet little Nikki went wild alerting and the manager came over. Needless to say, Robin was served immediately! Good job Nikki! Very good diabetic alert dog! Excellent training by Robin. His new Christmas sweater is personalized with “Dr. Niko”!!!

This grandmother found Sugar Dogs International (SDI) in December 2010 via the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). On behalf of her granddaughter, she donated $500 to SDI and in early July 2011, her granddaughter began training 2 Poodles. By September, both Poodles had awakened the young lady who had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in the middle of the night. The Poodles also growl and “fight” to get her attention when the young lady is spilling ketones with hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

I have not met you in person yet, but I already love you.
Whatever you have said to my teenage granddaughter has definitely made an impression. She is doing so much better ! In the past, her blood glucose readings have been very erratic. She would stay upset with her mother and me half the time because we would insist she check her blood and take extra insulin as needed. She is very pleased with herself to see her blood glucose levels getting into more acceptable ranges and being able to take more control over what she eats.

In Oct. 2012, Robin B. was flying from Atlanta to LA and sweet Dr. Niko alerted on another lady in first class with them. The lady promised Robin that she’d make an appointment with her doctor as “diabetes runs in my family.” Good job Nikki! Great training Robin! That’s a great opportunity to pass out Sugar Dogs brochures!

Dear Friends,
As we head into summer, we wanted to get you up to date on all of the exciting developments both inside and outside of the laboratory and the clinic.
It was a busy spring here in Boston. The book based on our BCG conference (held in London this past October) was published last month, and we are excited to speak with a growing number of researchers who are interested in trials using BCG to reverse or prevent autoimmunity.
And what about our Phase II BCG trial? While you are (hopefully!) at the beach, we will be putting the final touches on the clinical trial design. We are hopeful that the first patients will be receiving BCG this year. We have raised over $18 million now for this trial, but need another $7 million to complete it.
For our European friends, we will be presenting at the EASD meeting in Vienna this September.
